Free is in everyone’s budget, but when someone really needs something to be free in order for him or her to be successful, then free is the best thing out there. All children do not need an education, they need a GOOD education. Some children are unable to go to school for free, leaving them having to find different ways in how to pay for grad school courses or similar circumstances, so when free crops up for free education for a child, we need to jump on the chance. Included in this list are some schools founded by some extremely generous and caring individuals who had and continue to have a heart for children.
De Marillac Academy
This school was founded in 2001 and is tuition-free for low income families. The school utilizes state-of-the-art technology to reduce costs, such as an online grader, (gradecam.com/grader)and passes these benefits to the students (parents). The Daughters of Charity and De La Salle Christian Brothers are both co-sponsors, but all donations are welcome. The school is located in one of San Francisco California’s most violent and poorest neighborhoods, but this school is a beacon of light for the children in the community. The quality of education is high and the school boasts a high graduation rate. De Marillac’s academic program emphasizes reading, writing, English, math, science and social studies.
Epiphany School is an independent, tuition-free middle school for children of economically disadvantaged families from Boston neighborhoods. The school is full-service, meaning they provide medical and social services for the children as well as psychological counseling and immunizations. Epiphany provides the children with three meals a day and even fits them for glasses, if needed. The school’s motto is, “Never Give Up On A Child.”
Milton Hershey School
Today, Milton Hershey School is a cost-free, private, coeducational home and school for children from families of low income, limited resources, and social need. As the name suggests, the school is in Hershey, Pennsylvania and was founded in 1909 by Milton and Catherine Hershey.
Regis High School
Founded in 1914 by an anonymous benefactor and supported by the generosity of her family, its alumni and friends, Regis High School offers a tuition-free Jesuit college preparatory education to Roman Catholic young men from the New York metropolitan area who demonstrate superior intellectual and leadership potential.
Eagle Rock School and Professional Development Center
A full scholarship boarding school which accepts students from across the U.S. It’s an alternative residential high school for kids that were not successful in the traditional high school setting. The school is located in Estes Park, Colorado. Students pursue their academics, but are also exposed to the outdoors. Some of Eagle Rock graduates have attended wonderful colleges and universities like Maryville College and the University of Colorado in Boulder. After graduating from college some of the Eagle Rock alumni have gone back to Eagle Rock to teach.
The Hadley School for the Blind
William Hadley founded this school in 1920 along with Dr. E.V.L. Brown. Hadley offers courses free of charge to its blind and visually impaired students and their families and affordable tuition to blindness professionals. Today, Hadley is the largest provider of distance education for people who are blind or visually impaired around the world. It serves more that 10,000 students annually in 50 states and 100 countries. Hadley is also the largest educator of braille worldwide. The school is located in Winnetka, Illinois.
All resident students automatically receive an $11,000 full-tuition scholarship upon acceptance. College supporters fund the full-tuition scholarship so students may graduate with an excellent Christian education without the weight of debt.
University of the People
University of the People (UoPeople) is the world’s first tuition-free, non-profit, online academic institution dedicated to opening access to higher education globally for all qualified individuals, despite financial, geographic or societal constraints. The school was founded in 2009 and is affiliated with the United Nations GAID, the Clinton Global Initiative, and Yale Law School ISP.
Alice Lloyd College
From the website, “No qualified applicant should fail to attend the College due to financial constraints. The College maintains a guaranteed tuition policy for residents of 108 Central Appalachian counties. Full-time students from within this territory will have their cost of education met by a combination of grants, scholarships and participation in the Student Work Program.“
Warren Wilson College
From the website, “Beginning with the Fall 2018 incoming class, every NC undergraduate student who is eligible for federal and/or state need-based aid can attend Warren Wilson tuition-free.”
Macaulay Honors College
Provides full undergraduate tuition scholarships (excludes fees). You get a laptop and $7,500 in opportunities fund. The college is located in New York.
Berea awards a 4-year tuition scholarship to every admitted student. Additional costs such as room, board, and fees may also be covered by the college. Berea believes in giving a good education to those of limited resources. The college is located in Berea, KY.
College of the Ozarks
Debt is openly discourage. College of the Ozarks’ cost of Education Scholarship means students don’t pay tuition at C of O! There is a summer work scholarship that assists students with other costs such as books, room and board, and fees. The college is located in Lookout Point, Missouri.
Curtis Institute of Music
Since 1928 Curtis has maintained an all-scholarship policy. The Curtis Institute of Music provides merit-based full-tuition scholarships to all undergraduate and graduate students regardless of their financial situation. The college is located in Center City, Pennsylvania.
Deep Springs College
This two year college is located in Deep Springs, California in the desert. Each student attends for two years and receives a full scholarship valued at over $50,000. This is a liberal arts college for men only – sorry ladies.
Webb Institute – College of Engineering
Full-tuition scholarship covering all four years are awarded to all accepted students who are U.S. citizens or Green Card holders. Don’t forget other expenses like room and board, books, and fees. The college is located in Glen Cove, NY.
Cristo Rey Network
Is made up of Catholic preparatory high schools for underrepresented youth. Twenty-six schools in 17 states are part of the network which cater to urban youth. The network of schools provide students with real world experience through a Corporate Work Study Program. The Corporate Work Study Program funds the schools’ operating expenses. Located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Girard College is for students who are academically capable, but whose families lack the financial resources to fund their children’s education. Girard College is a boarding school and provides all students with full scholarships.
Williamson College of the Trades
Williamson provides all students with full scholarships making Williamson the only free college of its kind in the nation.
United States Air Force Academy
Tuition is on the academy, and it takes a congressional nomination for a student to be admitted. Students will sign an agreement that after graduation they will accept an appointment and will serve as a commissioned officer in the Air Force for at least eight years; five years of active duty and three years inactive reserves. Students must also take The Oath of Allegiance.
United States Military Academy
Tuition is on the academy, and it takes a congressional nomination for a student to be admitted. After graduation individuals will serve their country as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army.
United States Merchant Marine Academy
Tuition is on the academy, and it takes a nomination from a proper nominating authority, i.e., a U.S. Senator or U.S. Representative from your state of residence. Graduates must also serve in the U.S. Marine Academy after graduation.
United States Naval Academy
Tuition is on the academy, and an applicant must obtain a nomination from an official source in order to receive an offer of appointment to the Naval Academy. Graduates must also serve in the U.S. Naval Academy after graduation.
United States Coast Guard Academy
The Coast Guard Academy is tuition free and cadets do earn a modest paycheck. Graduates must serve for five years upon graduation. In order to apply to the Coast Guard there are no congressional nominations to seek.
