Teachers are always looking for ways to motivate and inspire their students. One great way that most teachers have not thought about is to assist their students in creating resumes – yes, resumes for children. Resumes are not for adults anymore and can be a wonderful tool in the classroom.
Here are several ways a child’s resume can be used and viewed in the classroom.
- Teachers can be proactive in teaching their students that what they’ll need to land a job is a resume. Teachers can explain what a resume is, what can be put on it, and what it can be used for. Some students may not get validation at home from Mom and/or Dad, and teachers are the next best validator of their students’ academics and their activities.
- Teachers can affirm the importance of their students’ activities by assisting them in developing their resumes.
- Teachers can let students know the importance of choosing “the right” activities that will help kids behave their way to success, and the best way to showcase a child’s activities is through a resume.
- Teachers can help their students document their interests, abilities, awards, and talents. A resume for a child is a great self-esteem booster for any student especially when some students don’t think they have anything or much to offer, or they think what they have accomplished in life is insignificant.
By helping students develop their resumes, teachers are showing students that they are more than their report card says they are. Children are more than their academics and organizations, colleges and universities are looking for well-rounded individuals. A child’s resume can point to leadership skills, organization skills, or teambuilding skills.
- As teachers get involved in assisting students with their resumes great relationships can be formed between teachers and students.
- As students come together and share information on their resumes they build relationships with one another because of the possible commonality of activities.
- As teachers get to know what interests a student, he or she also finds out what can motivate that student.
- A student may express goals and objectives that he or she may not have expressed before – even to Mom and Dad.
- Developing children’s resumes in the classroom can be great conversation starters and a way to get a shy child to want to speak and speak publicly.
- Developing children’s resumes in the classroom is another good way to get a child to articulate what he or she enjoys doing or what interests him or her – it’s a great way to get a child to express themselves.
- If new students enter the classroom and have resumes, what is on their resumes could pique the interest of other students – a resume can be a “friend magnet.” Other students would be interested in the activities of that child and also want to develop their own resumes.
- Teachers are used to stepping out of their comfort zones when it comes to their students and helping a child develop their resume is a path in a great direction for the student. One more thing, a wonderful class project would be to have students graduate from school with their resumes.
- Teachers can investigate successful children in the age group of their students which would help to inspire and motivate. These successful children might have resumes to share.
- Teachers can develop a child’s resume, have it enlarged as a poster and placed on an easel to remain in the classroom for encouragement.
- Teachers can have his or her class create a child’s resume. The students can call out different activities that can go on the resume, and at the end of the day the students will have a completed child’s resume to display in the classroom. This will give the students practice in creating resumes; maybe the kids can do this once a month until they have several kids’ resumes to put on display around their school. A poster-size child’s resume can be placed in the library, cafeteria, music room, front office, school entrance, and in other strategic places. Parents will also see these wonderful kids’ resumes and can imagine their children having one.
